Los Gatos Creek Trail Fire Fuel Reduction Work July 29 - August 29
The Santa Clara County Fire Department will be doing fire fuels reduction work along the Los Gatos Creek Trail from July 29 through August 29, 2024. The Trail will be closed from the Main Street Bridge to the Lexington Reservoir dam face from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, July 29 and every Tuesday through Thursday through the end of August.
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed ban on smartphone use in California schools would do more harm than good
A statewide ban on smartphone use in schools would run into the same enforcement problems as local restrictions – while also taking agency away from the school community. At Rocklin High School, uneven enforcement already hinders school administrators’ efforts to keep phones out of the classroom. The phone pocket policy, for example, is applied differently from teacher to teacher, creating friction between staff and frustration among students. Newsom’s proposal does not specify whether students would be allowed to keep their phones with them during the school day. If they are, this will continue to be an issue regardless of whether the rule comes from the principal or from the governor.

San Jose man who shot unarmed Airbnb guest gets 15 years prison
A San Jose man who was convicted of shooting an unarmed college student staying at an Airbnb in 2022 will spend more than a decade in prison, prosecutors announced Thursday.According to Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen, a judge sentenced 68-year-old Mark Henry Waters to 15 years. Waters was convicted in March of assault with a semiautomatic firearm in connection with the October 2022 incident.During the trial, Waters argued that the gun went off accidentally. San Jose police union works to remove judge from criminal cases
In a rare move, the San Jose police union is pushing to get a judge removed from hearing criminal cases, saying he is releasing suspects who shouldn’t be out on the streets. Because of bail reform, judges in California have been releasing more and more suspects on their own recognizance before their trial dates, but in a letter to the district attorney, the San Jose Police Officers' Association (SJPOA) said some of the suspects are violent and a danger to the community.
