Citizens & Culture, Third Hill Brewing to Open Friday
Downtown Silver Spring’s newest restaurants — Citizens & Culture and Third Hill Brewing — are set to officially open to the public on Friday, June 16. Citizens & Culture, which will open at the former home of Pacci’s Pizzeria at 8113 Georgia Ave., has been undergoing an “insanely soft opening” since last month as the restaurant has been preparing to officially open. The restaurant is the second downtown Silver Spring establishment from Tsega Hailemariam, who opened Kaldi’s Social House in 2013; a second Kaldi’s location is located in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, Va.
Mark’s Kitchen Owner Pens Farewell Letter
Mark’s Kitchen owner Mark Choe has posted a farewell letter following the restaurant’s closure after 32 years in Takoma Park. We reported in January that Choe would retire and close the restaurant, confirmed by Laura Barclay of Main Street Takoma. “We regret to see this Takoma Park institution close, but wish Mark Choe well as he begins his retirement,” Barclay said in an email to the Source.
Police: Missing Adamstown Man Last Seen Near Holy Cross Hospital
Detectives from the county’s Third District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating missing 74-year-old Charles Shepard of Adamstown. According to an MCPD news release, Shepard was last seen near Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, at approximately 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 8. Shepard stands approximately five feet, ten inches tall, and weighs approximately 190 pounds. He is bald and has gray facial hair, and was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, black shirt, blue jeans, and red and gray athletic shoes.
Silver Spring Artist Wins Wheaton Arts Parade Poster Contest
Silver Spring artist Fernando Santiago has been named the winner of the Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival poster contest, county officials announced this week. This year’s poster for the seventh annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival is based on a design submitted by Santiago, who will receive a cash prize of $500 donated by IHOP Wheaton.

Gene Lynch Park to be Dedicated Saturday
Gene Lynch Park in downtown Silver Spring will be officially dedicated in a ceremony Saturday afternoon, county officials announced. County Executive Marc Elrich and Councilmember Kate Stewart will join community members at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, for the dedication of the new park, named after Gene Lynch, the late Planning Board commissioner, civic leader, and political activist. Roadside Development has revealed its preliminary plans for the redevelopment of the Tastee Diner and adjacent Capital One Bank building in downtown Silver Spring. Tastee Diner closed abruptly in March after owner Gene Wilkes sold the property for $3.1 million to Roadside, citing health concerns. Wilkes and Roadside had been in discussions for over a year regarding the sale of the restaurant at 8601 Cameron St. in downtown Silver Spring.
Six Arrested in Gang-Related Shooting at Northwest Branch Stream Valley Park
Montgomery County Police say that six suspects have been arrested and charged with murder following a fatal shooting at Northwest Branch Stream Valley Park last November. Third District officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the 9000 block of Piney Branch Road on Wednesday, November 9, 2022. Upon arrival, officers found an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds in a wooded area behind an apartment complex; that victim was transported to an area hospital in serious but stable condition.
