For several years, beginning in the mid-aughts, every few months I drove up to central Wisconsin from my home in Evanston to visit a relative serving time for multiple DUI arrests. She and I were very close as children, but in late adolescence, our lives diverged drastically—she married and had a baby, and I moved to Washington, D.C. for college. It wasn’t until she was sent to prison that we began writing letters to each other again and picked up where we’d left off.

At This Time: Plein-air champs
Artist David R. Becker celebrates after winning best of show at the Evanston Plein Air Festival for his painting looking west on Noyes Street at the CTA viaduct. Becker, of Ingleside, painted all five days this week. He said he wasn’t sure what to enter, but a woman watching him work on Noyes told him: “You’re going to win the award,” as he was finishing this painting. “It’s all about the light,” Becker said. “I started at 8 a.m. on Friday. I love morning light.” He took the first-place judges’ award by besting 52 other painters at the grand finale of the fest sponsored by Evanston Made. (Photo by Richard Cahan.)

CHICAGO (AP) — Nico Hoerner doubled and scored the tying run in the ninth inning, then walked with the bases loaded in the 10th to give the Chicago Cubs a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. Chicago entered the ninth with just one hit before Hoerner sparked the late rally as the Cubs avoided the sweep. “I don’t like to change my at-bats too much in the late opposition, but you do know that if you get on base, you’ve got the guys on our team who have had our best at-bats right behind you, and I have a lot of trust in them,” Hoerner said. ”(Michael) Busch has been so consistent for a long time now, Seiya (Suzuki) as well, so a lot of trust in them and I felt like they had a great chance to try and win the game.” Cubs All-Star pitcher Shota Imanaga had a career-high 10 strikeouts and gave up two hits over seven innings, including a home run to Eugenio Suárez.
