What was making news in our area during this week in years past? The History Museum offers these newspaper excerpts to give you an idea.

July 21, 1906: “An effort is being made to try and secure the Five Flying Moores as a special free attraction for Springbrook park. These clever people do the most daring act now before the public and should prove a great drawing card.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 22, 1912: “Beverage lists in South Bend thirst parlors will have to be revised before Oct. 1, for after that date absinthe frappe and absinthe cocktails will have passed under the ban. After Oct. 1 it will be unlawful to import absinthe, which is being sold in increasing quantities in this country, or even to transport it from state to state. A decision of the pure food board has made the removal of absinthe drinks from club, hotel and saloon lists imperative.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 23, 1921: “To live to be nearly 92 years of age and still carry on, to be your own gardener, to enjoy fishing with as much zest as a youngster, and above all, to work eight hours daily in pursuit of one’s life-time vocation, is a distinction that comes to few persons. Henry Rausch, who will be 92 the fourth day of October, is one of these few persons. He is energetic, has excellent hearing and eyesight, and his memory is unaffected by the long span of years.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 24, 1930: “Members of the aviation commission and city officials to-day awaited definite proposals from the Bendix Aviation corporation supplementing a verbal offer to sell the proposed Bendix airport located at the city limits on Lincoln Way West to the city at cost or less than cost for use as a municipal landing field.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 25, 1947: “Automobile and motorcycle drivers who use Currant and Bittersweet roads northeast of South Bend, both of which are in need of immediate repairs will do well to drive with eyes fully open and with the utmost caution. The roadways on both are, for the most part, in good condition but Bittersweet road has some holes that are dangerous, especially for motorcycle riders. One hole is so deep that should a motorcycle drop into it the rider might be severely injured if not killed.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 26, 1955: “The newly created city recreation office will be located in the Park Administration Building in Howard Park, it was decided Monday at a meeting of the joint recreation committee in the Hotel LaSalle. The committee met with Paul Boehm for the first time since his appointment as recreation director by the Board of Education and the Board of Park Commissioners.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 27, 1964: “A ‘Learn to Swim’ program sponsored annually by the city recreation department, will open the first of two sessions Aug. 3 in the Mary Gibbard Park pool, according to James Tansey, director of special events in the summer program.” — The South Bend Tribune
