SOUTH BEND — The South Bend Police Department invites all kids, ages 18 and younger, to participate in its second annual patch coloring contest by creating a custom police patch.

Last year's winner, Braxton Weber, toured the police department and experienced an inside look into an officer's life by sitting in the chief's chair, donning gear in the SWAT truck and getting an official handprint done.

Braxton told officers that his artwork was inspired by the way he sees officers helping young people, the police department said on its Facebook page.

The public gets to choose the winner in a week-long Facebook contest. All submissions will be uploaded to the South Bend Police Department's Facebook page on Monday, July 29. Each "like" earns each submission a vote. Voting will end at 5 p.m. Aug. 2.

The winner will get their design on a limited-run embroidered patch, which will be sold for $5 to benefit the South Bend FOP Lodge #36 Santa's Elficers Program. The winning design will be the featured profile picture on the department's social media pages, Facebook, X and Instagram, and displayed at the South Bend Police Department’s National Night Out Event at the department, 701 W. Sample St., on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

The winner will also receive a personal tour of the police department with their family.

Parents can pick up a paper to create the design on at the department's headquarters or print it from the department's website . Submissions must include a name, age and phone number.

Completed coloring pages can be placed in the submission box in SBPD’s front lobby or scanned and emailed to Ashley O’Chap at aochap@southbendin.gov . All artwork must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Thursday, July 25.
