Notre Dame football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions by Fighting Irish experts

Notre Dame football ranked No. 7 in scoring offense and scoring defense last season, its highest rankings on either side of the ball in over a decade. There are plenty of positives to build off as Notre Dame football practice got underway this week. Marcus Freeman is welcoming his second full Notre Dame football recruiting class, which is ranked as the 10th-best in the nation by 247Sports. While the Notre Dame football depth chart didn't add any five-star players, it did land 18 players rated as four stars.
The best of those is defensive lineman Bryce Young of Charlotte Christian (NC). While he shares a name with a Heisman winner, he shares the bloodline of an NFL Hall of Famer as the son of 49ers legend Bryant Young. The freshman held his own during the spring portion of Notre Dame football camp, so how will coaches utilize him this upcoming season? If you want to see the latest Notre Dame football camp news, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at Irish Illustrated, the 247Sports affiliate that covers Notre Dame .

Replacing running back LT Joe Alt will be one of the highest priorities for Freeman. Alt became the Irish's first Unanimous All-American tackle in 30 years last season, which led to him being a top-five draft pick. Alt skipped the team's bowl game, as freshman Charles Jagusah got the start, and he appears to be in the lead to man the position in 2024 even after playing in just two games last year.
Right tackle Blake Fisher also departed for the NFL, so the Irish have questions at both offensive tackle positions. Tosh Baker and Aamil Wagner are expected to battle for the right side, but Guerby Lambert is waiting in the wings. The freshman was an early enrollee in January and was the eighth-ranked tackle prospect in his class by 247Sports. Get more updates on the Notre Dame RB at Irish Illustrated .
Another one of the Notre Dame football headlines surrounds the defensive backfield, which was the team's strength last year. The Irish led the nation in defensive pass efficiency, but five of their top seven DBs in terms of passes defensed are no longer with the team. Xavier Watts, who led FBS with seven interceptions a year ago, is returning, but Notre Dame's only other returning DB starter has a huge question mark on his availability for Week 1 versus Texas A&M.
Cornerback Benjamin Morrison, who helped limit Marvin Harrison Jr. to just 32 yards last season, had shoulder surgery in March. When Freeman was asked in May when Morrison would be ready to go, the coach said "some time close to Texas A&M." Notre Dame football camp begins exactly one month before that Aggie matchup, so Morrison's practice availability will be one of the biggest things to monitor during camp.
