Since Marcus Freeman took over the reins as head coach at Notre Dame , a big point of emphasis for the program was to get faster and more explosive on both sides of the football. One player who was on the roster that already had that quality was former running back turned wide receiver Chris Tyree.

During his four years with the Notre Dame program, Tyree went for 2,106 total yards and 15 touchdowns on the offensive side of the football. The 5-10, 192-pound playmaker also spent the 2023 season as the team’s top punt returner. He averaged 10.8 yards per punt return, including taking one back for a score.

Prior to the 2023 season, Tyree made the transition from running back to wide receiver. During that one season as a wideout, he was able to lead the Irish in receiving yardage, finishing with 26 receptions for 484 yards and three scores. Tyree opted to transfer to Virginia this offseason for his final year of eligibility. It appears that Tyree is on a very important radar early on.

Jim Nagy, who is the Executive Director of the Reese’s Senior Bowl, took the time to highlight Tyree on Twitter. It is his speed and versatility that was talked about most.

Virginia struck gold in portal last year with eventual sixth-rounder Malik Washington and former five-star Chris Tyree is another slot playmaker but with far more speed and multi-purpose skills, particularly as a dual-returner.

That is a big time compliment being compared to Malik Washington, who just led the Cavaliers with 110 receptions for 1,426 yards and nine touchdowns in 2023. Obviously that isn’t a tweet that is making a claim that the production will be similar, but more how talented of an athlete that Tyree is. Nagy continued with his comment, putting Tyree’s speed into perspective.

Tyree is one of only four players in Notre Dame program history that scored touchdowns as receiver, rusher, punt returner, and kick returner and Virginia head coach Tony Elliott, who was around elite receivers like DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins during his time at Clemson, says Tyree is the fastest wideout that he’s ever been around!

That last comment can be pretty frustrating to Notre Dame fans, who were typically frustrated with how Tyree was utilized. It just never felt like they utilized him well enough. We will see if that changes during his one year at Virginia. Regardless, it appears that we should keep Tyree on our radars for the 2025 NFL Draft.
