Notre Dame football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions by Fighting Irish insiders

Notre Dame is one of the most storied programs in college football. However, the Fighting Irish haven't appeared in the College Football Playoff since 2020. Head coach Marcus Freeman will try to end that drought this season with the College Football Playoff introducing a 12-team playoff bracket, expanding from the current four-team format. However, Notre Dame will have to replace several key pieces from last year's Notre Dame football roster, which posted a 10-3 record. One of the key pieces Freeman will have to replace is at quarterback following the departure of Sam Hartman, who threw for 2,689 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season.
Led by Tim Prister, who has covered Notre Dame since 1982, the staff at Irish Illustrated is on the ground covering every Fighting Irish practice and game. With their decades of experience, Irish Illustrated is one of the most trusted authorities of Notre Dame football coverage. They are always out front on football news, analysis and insight and there's no better collection of veteran voices than at IrishIllustrated.com, which also features community message boards where fans can connect and get even more insider information.
Replacing standout left tackle Joe Alt will be a top priority for Freeman. Alt, who became the Irish's first unanimous All-American tackle in 30 years last season, was the No. 5 overall draft pick. He skipped Notre Dame's bowl game, allowing freshman Charles Jagusah to start in the 40-8 blowout victory over Oregon State. Jagusah seems poised to secure the position for 2024 despite having played in just two games last year.
With right tackle Blake Fisher also heading to the NFL, Notre Dame faces uncertainty at both tackle spots. Tosh Baker and Aamil Wagner are anticipated to compete for the right tackle position, but Guerby Lambert is also a strong contender. The freshman, who enrolled early in January, was ranked as the eighth-best tackle prospect in his class by 247Sports. Get more updates on the Notre Dame RB at Irish Illustrated .
Audric Estime rushed for 1,341 yards and 18 touchdowns last season but he entered the 2024 NFL Draft and was selected in the fifth round by the Denver Broncos. Now, it appears that Jeremiyah Love is presumed to take over as the lead back after averaging 5.4 yards per carry and producing 462 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns as a freshman.
Love was a top-100 prospect coming out of high school and he'll likely be an even more explosive runner than Estime. However, Estime had over 20 pounds on Love and his ability to handle 15 to 20 touches on a weekly basis was an asset for the Notre Dame depth chart during his two years as a starter. Can Love handle a similar workload to help a Notre Dame offense that is replacing eight starters from last season? Find out more about Mike Denbrock's new offense at Irish Illustrated .
