Delegate tracker: Harris gets quick start on road to 1,986

President Biden has endorsed Vice President Harris to take over as the Democratic nominee to be president, but she’ll still need to secure enough delegates to officially replace him.

Close to 4,000 delegates will gather at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago starting Aug. 19. Biden has won more than 3,800 of those delegates, who will now all be released to vote for whomever they choose.

To win the nomination, a candidate must secure 1,986 delegates. As of 10 p.m. EDT Sunday, 531 delegates had already endorsed Harris.

A number of senior Democrats followed Biden in rallying behind Harris on Sunday, though there were notable exceptions. And it’s unclear if Harris will face a serious challenge.

Regardless, it will ultimately be up to delegates at the convention to pick the nominee.

Per Democratic National Committee rules, a candidate must receive pledged support from 300 delegates to appear on the ballot at the convention.

Harris has already begun reaching out to delegates to win their support. Tennessee was the first state to pledge all its eligible delegates to Harris, with South Carolina, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Florida following shortly behind Sunday.

Here are the delegations who have backed Harris, in order of release:

Tennessee

The state’s Democratic delegates met during a conference call Sunday and later announced that they were committing all 77 delegates for Harris.

South Carolina

All 55 of the state’s pledged delegates endorsed Harris following a virtual meeting. South Carolina was the first state to hold a Democratic primary this cycle, a historical shift away from the Iowa caucuses as the first-in-the-nation nominating contest.

North Carolina

A group of 168 of North Carolina’s delegates “voted unanimously” to endorse Harris, according to the state party chair, Anderson Clayton. She wrote on social media , “I’m proud of our party. LFG!”

New Hampshire

A group of 25 of the state’s delegates endorsed Harris after a meeting Sunday.

“We look forward to the National Convention in August and the next 107 days of campaigning for Vice President Harris and Democrats up and down the ticket,” the delegates wrote in a statement .

Florida

Florida is the fifth state to endorse Harris, as first reported by NBC News. The state is the largest delegation thus far, with 224 votes behind Harris.

Louisiana

The state’s 48 pledged delegates are coalescing behind Harris following a call Sunday night.
