The boys were strapped into their car seats when she rolled the vehicle into the lake. She later lied to authorities that a Black man had carjacked the car and took her children. However, nine days later, she made a shocking confession.

Reportedly, Susan Smith confessed to drowning her children to be with her then-lover, Tom Findlay, who did not want children. A week before the incident, Findlay wrote a letter to Susan, which prosecutors alleged was the mother’s motive to murder her children. In the letter, Findlay wrote, “Susan, I could really fall for you,” claiming that some things about her didn’t suit him. He added, “Yes, I am speaking about your children.”

In 1995, Susan Smith stood trial on two counts of murder, which resulted in her conviction and a life sentence. Susan’s husband, David Smith, has since moved on, remarried, and now has two children.

One of David Smith’s relatives claimed that he “still thinks of his boys every day, and doesn’t ever want Susan to get out,” reported Fox News . He plans to oppose Susan’s release because “she belongs in jail… she is exactly where she needs to be – in prison. And we will do what it takes to keep her there.”
