Speakers criticize protest response, inadequate raises at July UC Regents meeting
Students and employees across the UC expressed dissatisfaction with University administration during the UC Board of Regents meeting last week. Speakers during the July 17 public comment session of the regents meeting voiced concerns about what they deemed to be a misallocation of funds and employee underpayment, as well as the University’s response to the Palestine solidarity encampment at UCLA. Around 60 members of United Auto Workers Local 4811 also rallied outside the UC San Francisco campus that day to protest the unfair labor practice charges that the union filed against the UC in May.
Street Vendors Successfully Sue City to Remove Illegal ‘No Vending’ Signs And Won
Last week, street vendors across Los Angeles added another historic win to their decades-long fight to legalize street vending throughout the entire city. The victory comes after a lawsuit was filed in late 2022 by street vendors and local organizations, including Community Power Collective, Inclusive Action for The City, and the East L.A. Community Corporation, alleging that the anti-vending zones violated SB 946, a 2018 state law that had essentially legalized street vending.

Spicy dispute over the origins of Flamin' Hot Cheetos winds up in court
A court case could soon settle a spicy dispute: Who invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos? A former PepsiCo executive is suing the company, saying it destroyed his career after questioning his claim that he invented the popular flavor of Cheetos snacks. PepsiCo said Thursday it has no comment on the lawsuit, which was filed July 18 in California Superior Court. According to his lawsuit, Richard Montañez began working for PepsiCo as a janitor at its Frito-Lay plant in Ranch Cucamonga, California, in 1977. Montañez was the son of a Mexican immigrant and grew up in a migrant labor camp.

California physician pleads guilty to $3.2M fraud
A Santa Paula (Calif.) physician pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of healthcare fraud for defrauding Medicare out of more than $3 million. While working at two different Pasadena-based hospices –– Arcadia Hospice Provider nad Saint Mariam Hospice –– Victor Contreras, MD, billed Medicare for medically unnecessary hospice services, according to a July 24 news release.
