The basement of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Newburyport, which for more than two years had served as a makeshift home for two very large Afghan families, was abuzz with activity and excitement. Teenagers and an older man carried boxes up the basement stairs and outside. Women kept an eye on younger children running around, as they removed sheets from beds and told kids to help. Outside the church, 19-year-old Afzal led the way for his younger brothers and sisters, pulling a hand cart loaded with boxes down the brick walkway.

Lynnfield floats new support for pond
The Pillings Pond Subcommittee voted unanimously to dissolve itself at its meeting Tuesday, instead opting to form a nonprofit to fundraise for the pond. Antonio Sordillo, who lives along the east side of the pond, said he helped form the subcommittee in 2020 after the town’s Conservation Commission noticed growing support for the pond’s restoration in his Facebook group. Sordillo’s Facebook group, Pillings Pond Lynnfield MA, is a public group and has around 950 members.

Welcome to the Yankee Homecoming edition of the Mayor’s Corner. Mayor Reardon is on location at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church located at 7 Harris Street for the 2024 Newburyport Greek Food Festival. The Festival will run from 11:30 am – 8 pm on Friday, July 26th and Saturday, July 27th as well as 11:30 am – 3 pm on Sunday, July 28th. There will be live Greek music brought to you by OPA entertainment, on Friday and Saturday evenings from 4 – 8 pm. This year marks the 66th edition of Yankee Homecoming which started in 1958! Mayor Reardon highlights many of the events, including Brewfest, Olde Fashioned Sunday, the Waterfront Concert Series, Waiter/Waitress Race, Lions Club Road Race, Lions Club Bed Race, Fireworks and Parade. He reminds us that Yankee Homecoming is 100% volunteer-run and thanks the many people make the week-long event possible. On Wednesday, July 24, Mayor Reardon and the City of Newburyport hosted the Massachusetts Mayors’ Association monthly meeting. It was a great opportunity to shine a light on our fabulous city as over 28 Mayors and other staff and special guests gathered at the Firehouse for breakfast and speakers, followed by lunch under the tent at the Custom House Maritime Museum. The theme of this month’s event was culture. Representatives from the Massachusetts Cultural Council were the keynote speakers who talked about how culture builds community and spurs economic development through tourism, job creation, and attracting grant opportunities. Mayor Reardon is very grateful for the organizations, local restaurants and businesses that donated food and gift items for the event. Mayor Reardon applauded the work of DPS for keeping the downtown clean during the height of tourist season. The Police Marshal search is well underway. The search committee will be moving forward with in-person interviews. Enjoy Yankee Homecoming!
