Up to her neck in comedy - Pamela Rickard portrays Winnie
Like William Shakespeare, the name Samuel Beckett has the power to strike fear in the average theater-goer’s heart. All those actors stuck in trash cans and funerary urns! Those two guys waiting around for some dude who never shows! That disembodied woman’s mouth spewing crazy talk! What does it all mean? Well, fear not. When Phantom Theater brings Beckett’s “Happy Days” to Warren’s Edgcomb Barn on Saturday and Sunday, August 17 and 18, the audience will be treated to his most accessible play, a masterpiece laced with the playwright’s offbeat sensibility that is also laugh-out-loud funny.

Essex football looks to contend again
ESSEX, Vt. (WCAX) - The Essex Hornets got off to a 3-0 start in 2023, and everything looked great until the injury bug reared its ugly head. Missing quarterback Carter Crete and a handful of others, the Hornets struggled on both sides of the ball during a four-game losing skid against four of the best programs in the state. Essex bounced back with a Week 8 win over BFA to secure a playoff spot, but they were promptly dumped by rival CVU in the postseason for the second consecutive year. There were certainly some silver linings for Essex though: the young Hornets gained valuable experience that should create a level of playable depth this year that wasn’t there last year. And with a number of guys who would have been key contributors last year back, Essex feels like they have a chance to make some serious noise this fall. “Coming back, it’s really awesome,” Crete said. “You don’t play sport for a year, uou come back, and you’re playing your favorite one. So I’m really excited.” “It’s a ton of optimism,” added senior linebacker Joe Reed. “Last year didn’t go the way we wanted it to. I think we have a really good shot this year to make it far.” “Ever since we started up over the Summer training, all of our younger guys are more up to date,” said senior lineman Kymani Mignott. “And that means as a whole team, we can just advance quicker and like with higher quality. So you have more time to focus on the little things.” “In the offseason, we had a lot of guys hitting the weight room,” said head coach Ethan Curtis. “We did a lot of Summer sessions. I had, you know, about an average of 29 guys at each session. So that means people are buying in, right? All of our seniors are making sure the young guys know what Essex football’s all about. These guys are ready. They’ve been hitting the gym. Their speed is up. They’re out here playing Hornet football and there’s nothing better.” Essex opens the season at St. Johnsbury on Friday, August 30th.
