Two Massachusetts Cities Named Most Obese in the State
It's no secret that America has a problem with obesity and Massachusetts is certainly not excluded from that problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 42 percent of adults in the United States are obese. That's an increase of over 10% since 2000. In Massachusetts, 59.3 percent of adults are considered overweight, with a body mass index of 25 or greater, while 23.0% of adults are considered obese, with a body mass index of 30 or greater.

The first detection of West Nile virus in Massachusetts was made earlier this month. West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Worcester, officials said Tuesday. The Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project said mosquitoes carrying the virus were detected in the city’s Grove Street section on Tuesday. A pesticide will be sprayed by a mounted-truck in the area of Rural Cemetery after sunset on Thursday, the group said.

Worcester: Repairs to Heard Street bridge taking longer than expected
WORCESTER — Repairs to the Heard Street bridge, closed three weeks ago after the span was heavily damaged by gushing water from a broken water main, are taking longer than expected. City officials said earlier that repairs were expected to be wrapped up this week. But plenty more work remains, with a new target date of Aug. 9, according to the city. The span, over railroad tracks, has been closed to vehicles since July 8 after an embankment and other areas were washed away. Pedestrians are allowed to cross the bridge. In a press release dated July 17, 2024, the office of Acton state representative Simon Cataldo wrote: The Massachusetts House of Representatives voted favorably on omnibus energy and climate legislation that incorporates Representative Simon Cataldo’s…amendment to enact a landmark change to Massport’s charter. The amendment, filed with representatives of other towns near Hanscom Field, requires Massport, an independent public authority, to immediately consider environmental justice, greenhouse gas emissions limits, and climate objectives. The House’s omnibus climate and energy bill passed the chamber by a vote of 131 – 25. According to an email from Catalado’s office, similar language passed in the Senate version of the bill, and the two bills are currently in conference committee to reconcile the differences between the two bills.
