SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - The South Plainfield Tiger Sharks kicked off the 2024 Summer Swim season with two wins. On Wednesday, June 19 th , the Tiger Sharks were hosted by the Old Bridge YMCA Otters. The Tiger Sharks made a strong showing with 76 swimmers in attendance. The Otters, a new team this year, had 47 swimmers in attendance. The Tiger Sharks put forth a great effort during the meet and came away with a big win with a score of 412 to 74! Way to go Tiger Sharks!

In order to prepare for the next meet, Coach Karim advised swimmers that came to practice on Thursday to bring 5 articles of clothing. This could include t-shirts, shorts, socks, gloves, sweatshirts, etc. The purpose of this exercise was to create resistance in the pool and build up the swimmer’s strength and endurance. Plus, it was fun to see a group of kids swimming in their clothes! The swimmers had fun with the exercise.

On Saturday, June 22 nd , the Tiger Sharks hosted the Cedar Hill Cyclones in their first home meet of the season. Nerves were running high as the Tiger Sharks had a difficult time securing a win in past seasons against the Cyclones. The Tiger Sharks participated with 73 swimmers, while the Cyclones brought 35 swimmers to the meet. This year, though, the Tiger Sharks came away victorious against the Cyclones with a final score of 295 to 168! The whole team was very happy and excited, especially when they were allowed to push the coaches into the pool after the meet, as is tradition when the team wins at home.

Continuing the practice started last year by Coach Karim, he and his assistant coaches, Kelsie, Abby and Nick, are picking MVPs for each age group after the team’s Saturday meets. The MVPs for this week were Jacob Wang for the 8 and underage group, Taylor Wilson for the 9/10 age group, Vaarya Kashinath for the 11/12 age group, Cooper Haspel for the 13/14 age group and Josh Wilson for the 15/18 age group.

If you’d like to come out and support the Tiger Sharks, there will be two more home meets on Wednesday, July 3 rd at 6pm and Saturday, July 13 th at 9am. They’ll be swimming at the South Plainfield Community Pool and all are welcome! Come out, enjoy some yummy snacks at the team’s concession stand, which helps support the fundraising efforts of the team and cheer on the swimmers!
