One of the area’s first Asian restaurants opened in Southport in 1992. It closed two years ago. But some of the employees and staff weren’t content to let the restaurant’s history stop after 30 years .

Now, things are progressing at 5013 Southport Crossing Way in Southport for a new iteration of The Thai Peppers. Sukawadee Petchrakrai and Pongsiri Meeprom have been working to reopen the restaurant for months, said Bryce Morrison, with Cape Fear Commercial.

“But now construction is underway near Lowes Foods,” he said.

The original restaurant was located at 115 E. Moore St. Another longtime Southport business, Ocean Outfitters , has since taken over that space.

Meanwhile, the Southport Crossing shopping center is close to filling up, Morrison said. The Thai Peppers will join restaurants such as Eggs Up Grill, Falcone's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria, Los Primos Mexican and Bagel Dock Express.

The owners recently participated in the 2024 NC 4th of July Festival and they have posted some teaser photos and menu information on their website.
