SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WWLP) – Blueberries are back in season.

Adverse weather conditions have made growing difficult for some crops, but this may not affect blueberry lovers just yet.

Heat and rain towards the end of June was just shy of affecting this year’s blueberry crop. Luckily, soil and plants survived and you can see the tiny blue fruits at your local farm stand. Joe Calabrese with Calabrese Farms explained why consistent heavy rain can be detrimental to his fruit.

Last week we were getting those real heavy downpours that really doesn’t add moisture to the soil because it comes down so fast that it doesn’t even soak in it almost runs off the ground so I mean that kind of rain doesn’t really help us that much.

Blueberries come in season right around early to mid July. Calabrese told us he started picking ripe berries closer to late June because of warmer temperatures.

Other berries like strawberries and black berries are also in season this time of year.
