In honor of the Class of 2024, Baltimore County Public Schools is profiling one senior from each high school. These profiles highlight the intellectual and personal strengths of our seniors and their diversity.

Tell us about a teacher, assignment, field trip, or extracurricular activity that had a significant impact on you?

Throughout my high school career, I have had various tough battles that have allowed me to gain perspective in my life, and there are a few teachers who have been a huge contributing factor to my success. Advancement Via Individual Determination. As a freshman coming into school, I did not know what those four words meant or the value they held. AVID has taught me many life skills that I will be forever thankful for, and most importantly, the man who runs it all, Dr. Holland. He has been a mentor in my life for the past four years, and I thank him for all of it and me maturing into the young man I am today.

Mrs. Jubb. A counselor who is much more than just a counselor and helped me transition into high school and has helped me at my lowest. I thank her for seeing the potential in me even when nobody else did. Selecting me to be a state representative for our school as a Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Ambassador, I would say that was the event that projected me into my success my last few years of school, and Mrs. Jubb played a big role in that.

I leave Sparrows Point with many memories left behind, but many life lessons learned. Although it is cliche to say, a bit of advice I have for any younger students is to enjoy your time in school. Join clubs, play sports, persevere at math, cherish your teachers, and most important of all, don’t wish time away. We as students are always waiting for the next class to be over, or the next practice to be done, or to go home. But that is what life is all about. There is beauty in the struggle, so don’t wish time away.

What did you accomplish that you are most proud of?

While working part time and full time throughout high school, I would say I am proud of the time management skills I gained from managing multiple things at once. Being class president, part of multiple honor societies, playing sports for all my high school years, and taking on many leadership roles at school has made me feel accomplished. Taking on these tasks head on allowed me to gain discipline and structure in my life that I needed. This structure that I gained I feel has made me prepared for the next phase in my life after high school.

Pursuing my education in engineering, yet still undecided on a college, I plan to be a first-generation student going to college. During college, I plan to take advantage of my resources and use them for good.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

El Salvador. That is where I am from, and, as an undocumented immigrant, I have had many setbacks in my life that have prevented me from certain opportunities. I am in a very fortunate spot which millions of other kids dream of. Within 10 years, I see myself giving back. Giving back to my community back home and to the school that gave me so much during my teenage years. Using my education and resources from college, I plan to hopefully be doing some good. I don’t yet know what that looks like, but I am positive I can figure that out as I go on my journey. “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell. In this book, he emphasizes the idea of hard work and how very few individuals can make a generational impact within their families or society. In 10 years, I believe that many kids in my communities can dream big and see themselves for something more. I believe they will have something to chase. That is my dream of leaving a mark. My legacy. The American dream — giving many kids hope that they too can reach high.
