GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman from Sparta was killed in a crash on I-96 in Clinton County that involved three other people from Kent County on Wednesday.

Around 1:50 p.m., troopers with the Michigan State Police were sent to westbound I-96 near Grange Road for a crash involving two vehicles and two semi-trucks.

Responding troopers learned that a 2019 International semi-truck driven by a 33-year-old Grand Rapids man was traveling westbound on I-96 in the right lane. It appears that he didn’t slow down for traffic that had stopped due to construction. The semi rear-ended a 2017 Chevy Cruze driven by a 74-year-old Sparta woman. The Chevy then rear-ended a 2020 Land Rover that was driven by a 62-year-old woman from Rockford. The Land Rover then rear-ended a 2014 Freightliner semi-truck that was driven by a 23-year-old Grand Rapids man.

MSP said that the Land Rover rolled into a ditch and the Chevy Cruze was crushed between the two semi-trucks.

The woman from Sparta died, MSP said.

The 33-year-old Grand Rapids man and the Rockford woman were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Their conditions have not been released.

Westbound I-96 was closed for several hours on Wednesday while crews investigated and cleared the scene.
