Despite taking a second-half lead after a furious rally, Mt. Vernon (0-1) was unable to hold on during a 31-27 season-opening loss at Marion Harding (1-0). Senior quarterback Jake Taylor started his season in fine fashion, completing 13 passes on 24 attempts with a touchdown and an interception. Taylor also ran for two scores in defeat.

On Saturday, August 24, 2024, the Big Walnut High School boys golf team competed in the St. Francis DeSales tournament at Chapel Hill Golf Club and placed 2nd out of 24 teams. Ethan Krebs set the all-time low scoring record for Big Walnut with a 67. The team scored 294 and fired below 300 for the 5th time this season. There were 23 birdies and an eagle by Tyler Goetzman. Ethan Krebs also earned medalist honors for today’s tournament with 8 birdies. Other scores for the day: Tyler Goetzman 74, Nate Tripp 75, Jake Spann 78, and Toby Southworth 79.

Quarterback Blake Sipes was 6 of 14 passing for 69 yards and 2 touchdowns with an interception. On the ground Sipes ran for 95 yards and 2 more scores on 21 carries. Elijah Roush ran 35 times for 173 yards and a touchdown. Gavin Toombs caught a pair of touchdowns.

MG, Cardington win first football games
A fast start proved key for Mount Gilead in their season-opening 46-19 win at home over Triad Friday night in football. The team got touchdown runs by Carson Trainer and Eliot Jones, as well as a Cam Vickers’ return of a blocked punt, in the first quarter in taking a 20-0 lead over their guests. Jones would get a second scoring run in the second quarter and Trainer would open the third with an 82-yard kick return for points, as the Indians increased their lead to 33-6. Vickers and Wyatt Long would both score on the ground in the fourth quarter as MG continued to hold a big lead over their guests.
