    Veterans Salute 2024 at Sparta Historical Society

    SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta Historical Society held a Veterans Salute weekend event in June.  The two-day event included Revolutionary and Civil War reenactors.  Live exhibits included revolutionary war era artifacts, a civil war field surgeon, a military Chaplin with tent full of gear from the Vietnam War era.  He also performed morning services on Sunday.

    The Chief Commander of Picatinny Arsenal, Maj. Gen. Reim gave remarks to open the event, with a Civil War reenactors providing the Color Guard.

    The field surgeon explained the tools available at the time as well as some details about the conditions.

    “Healers and killers both advance during war,” he said.  The average age of a civil war soldier was 25.  It was civil war surgeon Jonathan Letterman that developed systems to get soldiers to hospitals, off the battlefield, he said.

    Attendees were able to walk around and ask questions about military equipment and vehicles.

    Sparta VFW had their grill going to provide food.

    The Sparta Historical Society has a full calendar of events and special exhibits running through the summer.
