SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta Cricket Club experienced their first “century” during the semi-final game between the Jaguars and Sparta Strikers. Mahantesh Bashettar executed this remarkable feat of scoring 100 runs on 47 balls. He batted for 70 minutes with 10 sixes and 5 fours and earned Player of the Match.
Riding on Bashettar’s success, the Jaguars won 172/6 to 99/8.
The league is in its fourth year playing on a pitch at Field #1 in Station Park. The other teams in the league are All Stars and Daredevils. They play a 16-over format with six balls in each over. Their games are l ivestreamed and posted to YouTube.
The finals are July 21.
Cricket Basics
11 players on a team, a bowler and 10 fielders
The field is typically an oval of grass with a rectangular “pitch” in the center.
Two wickets made of three sticks or “stumps” topped by two “bails” are at either end of the pitch.
Bails - smaller pieces of wood sit on top of the stumps to form a wicket
Two batters on the field at a time, each by one of the wickets
A bowler – the “pitcher”
A bowler throws six balls [think pitches] in an “over” and then another bowler takes a turn.
An “inning” is 16 overs. After the 16 overs the teams change sides; batters and fielders switch
The batter hits the ball and both batters run back and forth between the wickets for a point. Each time they run to the opposite wicket is a point.
The batter hits the ball and it bounces or rolls outside the circle around the perimeter or “boundary” of the field for 4 points.
The batter hits the ball and it clears the boundary on the fly for 6 points.
Outs
Caught fly ball,
Bowled – the ball hits the stump when “pitched” knocking off the bails
Run Out - Fielder throws the ball or catches the ball and the hits the wicket, knocking off the bails, before the batter reaches the batting/bowling area at the end of the pitch
A little more
A batter continues to hit until they are out. Once they are out they do not come back into the game to bat.
The batters do not have to run if they do not think they will get to the other wicket before the ball. Both batters have to run or not run.
Batters can hit the ball in any direction, including behind them. They can also change which side they bat from at any time.
A bowler throws six balls for an “over” and then the next bowler throws. The bowler can return but not throw two overs in a row.
A “bad pitch” is called a “no-ball.” One type of no ball is called “wide” like a ball in baseball.
The team in the field remains there until all 16 overs of six balls each are thrown.
