SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta Recreation Track and Field program had a successful second year with 80 participants ages six through 15. The boys team took second place overall in Division 2 and Sparta athletes brought home 26 medals from the Lakeland League Championships in June at Mount Olive High School.
In preparation for the championship races, the athletes trained twice a week beginning in March with many volunteer coaches, Coach Audrey Hopkins said.
“The athletes from the Sparta program’s dedication and work ethic has been reflected in their outstanding season,” Hopkins said. “Special shout out to Abigail Crane who had an injury just prior to the Championships but was ranked highly in both the Girls 13-15 800m and Mile events.”
The athletes also competed in weekly meets as part of the Lakeland League, culminating in a Clinic Championship on May 29. Sparta had athletes finish in the top 5 in every event at the Clinic Championship. The top two athletes in each event qualified to compete at the championships in Mount Olive.
The coaches:
The Clinic Program for children 6 to 8-years old – Ty Howard and Anthony Page
The Youth Program – Brett Bagley, Audrey Hopkins
Additional parent coaches: Anne and Tom Zapata, Steve Kierney and Deagan Hopkins.
Hopkins said the program appreciated the support of the Sparta Recreation Director Jeanne Monetmarano “who continues to support this program as well as providing invaluable assistance this season at the Sparta Home Meets and Coach Kimball who helped with the administrative burden of running this program.”
Three athletes from this program, Rafferty Hopkins, Margaret Weber and Lexi Eck continued their training and competed successfully at the USATF NJ Youth Championships.
