When Flanner House Public Library closed six years ago, it left a void in the community. That all changed on Saturday, June 19, 2021, otherwise known as Juneteenth, when Ujamaa Community Bookstore took over its space and opened its doors to the community. Today, the bookstore is a Black-owned community bookstore that sits in the Near Northwest neighborhood of Indianapolis, and celebrates “authors, artists, and activists.”

East Indianapolis Gunfire Leaves Baby and Woman Wounded; Suspect Surrenders Hours Later
Indianapolis, IN – A suspect is in custody after a late-night shooting in East Indianapolis left a woman and a baby hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities responded to a call around midnight, Saturday, about gunshots on the 6100 block of East 21st Street. Upon arrival, officers found the victims, an adult female and an infant, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where the baby remains in critical condition.
