ROANE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A long-awaited construction project will finally reach completion on Thursday, July 18, 2024, with the opening of the Scott Miller Hill Bypass on US 33 near Spencer.

The bypass, spanning 4.3 miles from Tuckers Run to Middle Fork on US 33, will enable trucks and other vehicles to bypass hazardous curves on the route.

Transportation Secretary Jimmy Wriston , P.E., expressed, “This project has been a long time coming and is incredibly significant to the people of West Virginia .” Wriston also highlighted that the bypass will address the high frequency of accidents on Scott Miller Hill due to its steep grade.

Mayor Williams, in office for over four decades, noted that the Scott Miller Hill project has been in talks for as long as he can remember. The project was awarded to Kanawha Stone of Poca in 2020 with a contract valued at $40.4 million.

Governor Jim Justice emphasized the significance of the project for the safety of motorists, stating, “This project will significantly enhance the safety of our roads by eliminating a major mountain bend leading into Spencer.”
