Update on Utilities and the Spencer Tornado Siren
Spencer, IA (KICD) — Spencer Police Chief Mark Warburton says the switcher at the fire department that allows tornado sirens around Clay County to be activated is still out. The protocol now would be to contact those individual towns to turn on the sirens if necessary. Warburton says nearly all communities are connected by pager. He hopes the activation system is repaired within a couple of days.
Disaster Recovery Centers open in Spencer and Rock Valley; Spencer officials urge civilians to stay weather aware in the midst of forecasted weather
DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) -After last week’s flooding, Disaster Recovery Centers will open in two Siouxland locations. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will open a Disaster Recovery Center on Tuesday. July 2 beginning at 1 p.m. in Spencer Iowa, according to the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
Spirit Lake Woman Honored with Volunteer Award
(Spirit Lake)--Northwest Iowa RSVP and Iowa Lakes Community College have announced that Leonora "Leah" Streeter of Spirit Lake has been honored with a Governor's Volunteer Award from Volunteer Iowa. The award was presented by Governor Kim Reynolds and Lt. Governor Adam Gregg during a special recognition ceremony last week in Ankeny.
Water Main Break Repaired in Estherville, Boil Advisory Still in Place
(Estherville)—A water main break in Estherville has been fixed but a boil advisory remains in place for customers in the affected area. Estherville City Administrator Penny Clayton says the water main break occurred around 1 pm Sunday and was repaired around 7:45 pm. The initial affected area included 1st and 2nd Avenues North between 13th and 15th Streets and North 14th and 15th Streets between 1st Avenue North and 4th Avenue North. It was later expanded to include 13th St. from Central to 2nd Ave N (excluding Hy-Vee), and 1st and 2nd Ave North from 12th to 13th Streets.
Debris Update and Information on Cleanup
Spencer, IA (KICD) — Help continues to arrive from the state of Iowa. Department of Transportation cleanup crews arrived Saturday. Deputy City Manager Kevin Robinson said they picked up a lot of debris in just one day. Again, those stats from Saturday – the first day of cleanup.
Mayor Moment: Changes afoot at City Hall
As we celebrate the Fourth of July, I thought I would give another update as to what is going on in and about City Hall. First of all, a downer: Rachel Kruger has resigned her finance manager position to accept an offer too good to be refused. Rachel will be hard to replace, as she is a model employee who is professional in all of her actions, both work and personal. I wish Rachel the best as she begins her career in her new position.
Catastrophic: Wildlife Impacted by Flooding in Iowa
The flooding saw waters breach the Big Sioux River levee, causing extensive internal water damage to hundreds of homes. In Spencer, Iowa, south of the Little Sioux River, resident Ben Thomas reported that many homes are now uninhabitable, submerged on their main floors. This dual impact has affected both homes and businesses alike in the area.
Estherville evaluating how city-owned infrastructure handled flooding
The power went out in most of Estherville on Saturday and City Administrator Penny Clayton says a temporary fix to get electricity flowing again is now permanent. “We worked with Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative to install an emergency tie in…so that we could backfeed power into our system from theirs,” Clayton says. “That will stay in place and will be available when we need an emergency tie in with them or they need one with us.”

Stoplights in Spencer are back in action, but power is still out in many neighborhoods following flash flooding that hit the city ten days ago.
