Man arrested during SWAT standoff in Spokane Valley

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A man was arrested during a SWAT standoff at a home in Spokane Valley on Wednesday night, according to Spokane County Sheriff's Office.

Around 8:40 p.m. on July 3, deputies responded to a home near Broadway Avenue and North Locust Road for reports of a man pacing back and forth in the yard with what appeared to be a shotgun.

When deputies arrived, they found the man, Paul E. Nierenberg, 42, in backyard of the home and determined he was armed.

SCSO said Nierenberg did not follow commands and went back inside the home.

Deputies soon discovered he was in violation of a domestic violence no-contact order and was not allowed to be at the home. Nierenberg was also not supposed to have guns as part of the order.

A woman described by SCSO as a "female victim" was safely taken out of the home by deputies.

Shortly afterwards, SWAT responded to the scene and gave the man inside the home several warnings.

Around 10 p.m., Nierenberg surrendered and was taken into custody.

During a search of the property, deputies found 14 firearms.

Nierenberg was booked into Spokane County Jail for unlawful possession of a firearm and violating a domestic violence protection order.

    No injuries were reported.
