Family displaced by kitchen fire at Spokane Valley apartment complex

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - A kitchen fire in Spokane Valley Friday morning left a family displaced.

According to the Spokane Valley Fire Department, a call came in just before 11 a.m. Friday about a fire at an apartment complex on South Sullivan Road. The caller said a pot on a stove was on fire in one unit of the two-story building.

The family got out of the apartment as smoke filled the unit.

Firefighters were able to knock the fire down before it spread to the other apartments.

No injuries were reported. SVFD says the family is staying with friends until the apartment can be restored.

Investigators at the scene determined the fire started oil splashed onto the stovetop while someone was cooking chicken.

SVFD says cooking is the leading cause of home fires.

If you have a grease fire in your kitchen, smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turning off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until its completely cooled.

If you have an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed.
