How you can stay safe on the water this weekend

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane River is a treasure for the community, especially during the summer days.

"We just saw the temperatures and were like 'the heat is raging,'" said Katie Dosch who is visiting Spokane from Colorado. "We do a lot of rafting in other states and tube and stuff. So getting in the water and getting cold sounded nice."

But while the water may be refreshing, it can still be dangerous.

As people continue to flock to the water this weekend, Spokane Fire wants you to be aware of the dangers.

"We want people to get out and enjoy our river. We just want you guys to do it in a safe manner," said Captain Jared Contabile with Spokane Fire.

Captain Contabile said call volume has picked up within the last couple weeks. He urges everyone to be safe when going out to float the river.

"Have a buddy or some friends that you float with and let people know where you're going to go," Captain Contabile said. "It's a good idea, if you can, while you're driving to the spot where you're going to launch, scout the river. See some of the hazards before you get out on the river."

As people launched watercrafts out onto the river Friday, almost all were taking the proper precautions.

One of those people was Jack Taylor, who says he loves going out on the water with his dad.

"How do you stay safe on the river?" 4 News Now asked Taylor.

"I wear my life jacket," he replied.

It's a good idea to follow Taylor's lead. Life jackets are required for all watercraft users in Spokane.

Local resident Randy Pinola, who was gearing up to float the river, said he does this often.  He added while now is the perfect time to be on the water, there are a few things you need to look out for.

"You got to watch for rocks," Pinola said. "This time of year the water is a little shallow. So you have to be vigilant on when you're getting through the rapids so you're not hitting your bottom and scraping your knees or your legs."

Spokane Fire says it's also good to watch out for foot entrapments like rocks or debris, don't jump off any rocks, and be extremely cautious when letting your kids play on the water.
