Heat causes concrete on Highway 195 to burst twice between Spokane and Colfax

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. - Extreme heat caused two concrete panels to burst on Highway 195 between Spokane and Colfax Tuesday afternoon.

According to Washington Department of Transportation, crews finished fixing the second burst panel around 4:45 p.m. Both bursts happened hear the Horn School Rest area just south of Rosalia.

The burst happened because heat caused the panels to expand and pressure to build between road panels. Eventually, the panels gave way to release the pressure.

That stretch of road is older, making it more likely for these types of issues to happen.

WSDOT said it's possible more bursts could happen with more heat, but unpredictable.
