A once close game ended not so much, as Spokane broke up a one-run game with five runs in the eighth inning to defeat Hillsboro 9-3 on Saturday night, Aug. 3, at Avista Stadium in Spokane.

The Indians used four singles, a walk, and one very big throwing error to plate the eighth inning’s handful of runs and end the Hops’ three-game winning streak.

Spokane starting pitcher Jack Mahoney earned the win, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over six innings, while Hillsboro’s Jacob Steinmetz took the loss, allowing four earned runs despite striking out seven in 6.2 innings.

The Hops took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning and trailed just 4-3 after consecutive runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the last of which came on a Kevin Sim solo home run.

The Indians tied the game 1-1 in the bottom half of the second inning, then took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks mostly to five base knocks.

Jean Perez was 4-for-4 in the game for Spokane, while Jose Cordova and Juan Guerrero each had three hits.

Gino Groover and Jack Hurley had two hits apiece for Hillsboro.

The two teams will finish their six-game series at 1:05 p.m. this afternoon at Avista Stadium.
