SPOONER — The drama and music departments at Spooner High School will present “Crazy for You on March 21-24 in the school’s auditorium.

“Crazy for You,” with music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, opened at the Shubert Theatre on February 19, 1992, and ran for 1,622 performances. It won the 1992 Tony Award (Broadway), the 1993 Olivier Award (London) and the 1994 Dora Award (Toronto) for Best Musical. Famous musical numbers include “Someone to Watch over Me,” “Slap that Bass,” “Embraceable You,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Stiff Upper Lip” and “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.”

“‘Crazy for You’ was the first musical produced at SHS in March of 1998, and it seems a fitting time to come full circle back to our roots some 26 years later,” said Bob Thornley, the show’s producer and director.

The musical will be performed on March 21 at 7 p.m., March 22 at 7 p.m., March 23 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and March 24 at 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale now: online at shs.booktix.com (preferred option), by phone/voicemail at 715.635.0210 or at the door.

According to Thornley, “The show was built with wonderful, old Gershwin songs that were used to craft a fabulous show that will leave audiences asking for more.”

A zany rich-boy-meets-hometown-girl romantic comedy, “Crazy for You” tells the story of young New York banker Bobby Child, who is sent to Deadrock, Nev., to foreclose on a rundown theater. In Deadrock, Bobby falls for spunky Polly Baker, the theater owner’s daughter. But Polly takes an instant dislike to the city slicker, so Bobby vows — through cunning, razzmatazz and a hilarious case of mistaken identity — to win Polly’s heart and save the theatre. “Crazy for You” is set in a western mining town in the ‘30s, so audience members should be advised that simulated alcohol use and simulated firearm use are a part of the show.

“It has truly been amazing watching this production come together from beginning to end. Being a part of a large group of students, coming together and working hard towards an impressive goal is something I take a lot of pride in,” said Lily Hotchkiss, one of the show’s two student directors.

The current Spooner production began in August with a two-day workshop and auditions and continued from November to January with a course called musical pre-production. Cast tap dance lessons occurred from October through December, and the actual performance/production class and rehearsals began on Jan. 23. Altogether, nearly 70 SHS students are involved.

“The cast, crew and pit band have all become like family, and the memories we have made together will undoubtedly become some of the best from high school,” concluded Hotchkiss.

So for a memorable evening of truly great, toe-tapping music and wonderful theater entertainment, be sure to attend “Crazy for You” next weekend at Spooner High School!
