Two Republican candidates and one Democrat candidate are running for Wisconsin 74th Assembly District representative in the partisan primary election Tuesday, Aug. 13.

The new 74th Assembly District serves all of Sawyer, Washburn and Iron counties, plus the bottom two-thirds of Douglas, Bayfield and Ashland counties and the towns of Blaine, Swiss and Webb Lake in Burnett County.

The 87th Assembly District incumbent, James Edming, will retire from office at the end of this year.

The Record asked each of the Republican candidates for 74th Assembly in the primary election — Scott Harbridge and Chanz Green — to submit information about their background and issues they are emphasizing.

The Republican primary election winner will face Democrat candidate Jeanne Bruce of Spooner in the Nov. 5 election. Bruce is unopposed in the Aug. 13 primary.

    Scott Harbridge

Scott Harbridge, a resident of the Town of Weirgor in Sawyer County, states that “I have a lifetime of experiences that will aid me in working for the people. I am an Army Airborne veteran with the 82nd and 509th and spent the first two years overseas in Europe. We trained with our European allies and had a front-row seat on how exceptional the United States is.

“I swore an oath to this country and will honor that oath till the day I die.

“I worked for the Department of Corrections for 26 years and 24 of those years I was a sergeant, working at several institutions throughout the state. The most valuable word I learned was the word ‘no.’

“I was on the Policies and Procedures Committee for many years. My focus was security and sometimes didn’t align with others’ thinking. I would stand on the principles that would not jeopardize the security of the institution or the public.

“I was active with the emergency response units at several institutions and I was promoted to the team leader for the Hostage Extraction Team. I ran the laundry at two different institutions and was in charge of one of the larger budgets at the institutions. I had to do payroll and hire and fire the inmate workers. I was the sergeant on several housing units and in charge and responsible for the officers working those units, and responsible for the safety for all of the staff and inmates. My job was to ensure that everyone was working together, and to get the inmates to do what you wanted them to do.

“In an environment that was always trying to compromise you, I understood that once you except the compromise, it is hard to go back. I will not compromise on what’s right and wrong for any reason.

“I am running for office because I believe we need big changes in Madison. The deep state establishment machine in Madison is running the show and finds ways to control the politicians who are supposed to represent ‘We the People.’ Our representatives are supposed to listen to us, not the people with money, that invest in their votes. The establishment Republicans like to point fingers at and complain about the Democrats and blame them for everything. I am a patriot and Republican and believe that you need to look at yourself first if you want to figure out why you are so ineffective and what you can do better so you can make positive, effective changes for everyone, not just your party to retain control.

“We have some good legislators in office now, but they need help. I cannot sit back and watch our state and country continue down the path that we are on. Our current government creates the problems and crises that they then come in and pretend to fix. They use these self-created opportunities to divide us up into groups so we can fight and argue with each other. That way, we are easier to control and continue down the path to insanity.

“I love my state and the country and refuse to give up. We need fighters that have the courage and leadership to stand up to the current state of affairs and not back down. We need God back into our lives, and especially in Madison. He has a plan; now we need some good people who know the difference between right and wrong to start flinging some stones.”

Harbridge states that “poor leadership and broken promises from the politicians that are supposed to represent the people is the most pressing problem. Because of that, the residents are fed up with the economy, inflation and their faith in our current elections being secure. They are tired of no accountability for our elected officials. They don’t feel safe in their own communities anymore because our borders are wide open. They are tired of endless wars, higher taxes, medical mandates, DEI and grooming of our children in our schools. They are tired of being lied to, being divided up into different groups, called names and having everyone fighting amongst each other by the government-created crises. They are tired of paying for benefits for illegals in this country while our veterans are homeless and out on our streets. They are tired of rules for thee and not for me with zero accountability. I am running for Assembly so these issues ‘can and will be addressed’; I plan to give the ‘people’ their voice back in our government by providing uncompromising leadership for the people that elect me to work for them.”

Harbridge was born and raised in Fond du Lac. He currently resides with his wife, Stephanie, in Weirgor Township, Sawyer County.

“I have lived in Wisconsin my entire life, with the exception of the four years I served in the U.S. Army, 82nd and 509th Airborne,” he said. “I will be representing and serving my district and all the people of Wisconsin.”

I am the only pro-life candidate for this district with the Pro-Life Wisconsin Endorsement. I believe in funding for Adoption not Abortion.I support the military, veterans and law enforcement.America First Patriot — God, Family & Country.Smaller Government with Less Spending, Waste & Lower Taxes.School Choice & Parent’s Rights with the money following the student.Medical Freedom with No Mandates.Election Day as a Holiday with Paper Ballots, Hand Counted on the Same Day.

    Chanz Green

Green, a resident of Mason, was born and raised in rural Wisconsin, spending much of his childhood at his family’s cabin hunting and fishing. He currently resides in Grand View.

He began his public service career toward the end of high school, when he began working in municipal utilities. About four years ago, he was hired as the utilities manager for the City of Ashland. In this position, he played a major role in redesigning the city’s wastewater treatment system to prevent leaks and overflows of wastewater from ending up in Lake Superior. He states that he is “proud that, since the redesign two years ago, Ashland has not had a wastewater overflow incident. Green also served his community for over 10 years as a volunteer firefighter.”

A little over a year ago, he began his private sector career. He currently owns both the Pioneer Bar in Cable and Ashland Event Rentals. He states that he is “looking forward to using his experiences in both public utilities and the private sector to bring a strong, northern Wisconsin voice to Madison and represent the entire district. I am a common-sense conservative with small-town values. I am a proud member of both the National Rifle Association and Hunter Nation.”

He states that his goals are “simple: preserving sportsmen’s rights, prioritizing workforce development and making sure northern Wisconsin gets its fair share of infrastructure spending. It is time the 74th Assembly District has a strong and effective voice in Madison.”

    His goals are:

    1. Ensuring small businesses have the resources they need to attract and retain quality employees, and ensuring those employees can lead rich and fulfilling lives in northern Wisconsin. Promoting trade schools and apprenticeships to empower the local workforce.

    2. Empowering parents and promoting school choice.

    3. Giving parents the power to choose what school their children can go to, encouraging parental engagement in school districts and making sure school districts are transparent with the parents. This will lead to better outcomes in education for our students.

    4. Northern Wisconsin doesn’t have access to the same resources that most of Wisconsin has, so it’s necessary that our local communities are supported by the state. I want our local communities to be successful and resourceful. Because when they thrive, the state of Wisconsin thrives.

    5. As a hunter, I know the impact of hunting in northern Wisconsin. It is crucial to keep that tradition alive. It is important to put an end to government overreach to preserve the rights of all hunters. It is time the DNR listened to hunters, not the other way around.

    6. Our Second Amendment has been under attack. To me, it is pretty simple: “The right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” My promise to you is that if I get reelected, I will introduce legislation that not only protects our Second Amendment rights but also strengthens it.
