SHELL LAKE — Shell Lake’s end-of-summer celebration, Labor Day weekend’s Town & Country Days, will kick off Friday afternoon, Aug. 30, with the Lions Club 15th-annual whitefish dinner at the Shell Lake Community Center.

As in years past, the club will serve fresh, deep-fried and skinless Lake Superior whitefish as the main course. These freshly caught fish, supplied by the Halverson Fisheries family of Cornucopia, will be served to you in the afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m. or until it’s gone. The club continues to try to make improvements to this event in an effort to try to get this popular Lake Superior delicacy out to you faster.

Besides deep-fried whitefish, this dinner also features baby red potatoes, coleslaw and Bill’s Famous Fry Bread, along with dessert and a beverage. The cost remains as last year.

As in past years, the proceeds from the fish fry, as with other fundraising events, will be used to improve the quality of people’s lives in the greater Shell Lake area and others in need. Past recipients of the funds generated by club’s fundraising activities include the American Cancer Society, the Lions Eye Bank, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Washburn County Christmas Fund for disadvantaged families, to name a few of them. Other examples of worthy causes include monetary help for victims of house fires and scholarships for graduating Shell Lake High School seniors, to name only a few.

Lions Club members also assume the seasonal responsibility of beautifying the city with projects like the flower baskets adorning Main Street and the Christmas lights in the campground. Ventures such as these create a welcoming format for visitors to Shell Lake and residents alike.

Lions Club calendars for 2025 will also be available at the event. This is the club’s biggest fundraiser and we encourage everyone to buy a calendar to support the club and the work they do. This year, 750 calendars will be sold for $30 apiece with a grand prize of $2,500, a Jan. 1, 2025 prize of $500, a $300 monthly prize and a daily payout of $35.

We hope to see you Friday afternoon, Aug. 30, to kick off Town &Country Days, a Labor Day tradition marking the end of another Shell Lake summer.
