SPOONER — The Spooner Cardinals baseball team lost a narrow decision to the Haugen Knights this week.

    Spooner 2, Haugen Knights 3

The Spooner Cardinals came out on the losing end of a good baseball game on Saturday night in Haugen. The Knights kept the Cardinals lineup in check and got just enough offense themselves for the 3-2 victory.

Mark Nauertz started on the mound for Spooner and tossed five solid innings and left the game tied at 2-2. Nauertz struck out four and scattered seven hits in his outing. Evan Potaczek made his Cardinals debut in a relief appearance and threw a 1-2-3 sixth inning. The Knights tagged Trevor Brimblecom in the seventh inning for one run as the first four batters reached base and scored on a sacrifice fly out to right field to take a 3-2 lead.

Spooner’s offense sputtered for the most part by garnering only four hits on the day but also benefitting from seven walks and two hit batters. Sam Holden drove in the game’s first run in the third inning on a single to left field to knock Chad Patko in to score. The Cardinals gave up a run in the bottom of the third inning after a towering lead-off double to left field was followed with a throwing error on a pickoff attempt at second base. Spooner scored again in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead but allowed Haugen to answer back with another run after a lead off double.

Spooner falls to 3-1 overall (1-1 Indy) as they look ahead. Friday night, Spooner hosts Spring Valley at 7:30 p.m. for a non-league game. Spooner travels back to Haugen on Saturday night for an 8 p.m. rematch with the Knights.

    Other Independent League scores:

Hayward led Blue Hills 4-0 with play suspended due to rain in the fourth. Hayward defeated Brill 4-3 on a walk-off hit.
