SPOONER – Make sure to get to the Thursday, July 11 performance of the 70th Spooner Rodeo a little early for the great ride known as Exceptional Rodeo.
Exceptional Rodeo is sure to bring a smile to your face, just as it does for the young cowboys and cowgirls who compete in the Spooner Rodeo Arena, riding high atop specially built, hand-rocked bulls and brings, roping their own steer, racing across the arena on a stick horse and even getting to ride a real horse.
The wide-eyed looks on their faces show they are thrilled and happy, and proud parents can usually be seen snapping photos to remember the night.
The youngsters are partnered with cowboys and cowgirls of all ages who assist them with taking part in specially designed rodeo events. Partners might include the Spooner Rodeo queen and princess, the Rodeo clown or maybe even a kind-hearted rodeo cowboy or cowgirl.
Steer roping, stick horse riding, flag races and exciting eight-second rides aboard a hand-rocked horse and bull are some of the unique thrills the young contestants will experience. They also get to ride a real horse and round the arena on a horse-drawn wagon.
Exceptional Rodeo for special needs children will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 11. The heart-tugging 45 minutes of fun and excitement is presented by the Spooner Rodeo Committee. It is the experience of a lifetime for the young special needs contestants and their families. The kids anxiously look forward to Exceptional Rodeo each year and cherish the memories long after the events are over.
The Spooner Rodeo Committee kept Exceptional Rodeo going after the national program was discontinued. The contestants receive cowboy hats, bandanas, trophies and more to help them remember their special night. And long after the trophies gather dust and the hats no longer fit, the contestants will still hold dear their memories of Exceptional Rodeo in Spooner.
