NOTE: Due to the July 4 holiday schedule, this article will appear online at spooneradvocate.com, and on Spooner Advocate Facebook this week.

SPOONER – In a home game at Spooner’s Merchant Park, the Spooner Cardinals overpowered the visiting Blue Hills Beasts 10-0.

Spooner 10, Blue Hills Beasts 0

The Spooner Cardinals returned to the friendly confines of Merchant Park to face the newest member of the Independent League, the Blue Hills Beasts.

After a scoreless two innings, Spooner struck for three runs in the third to seemingly take control of the game. The bats were relatively quiet for Spooner after that, as the team only managed four hits on the night as the team seemingly hit a record number of “at-em balls,” where the ball is struck hard but right to a fielder.

Trevor Brimblecom started on the mound for Spooner and pitched five innings and only allowed two base runners as he cruised through the Beasts lineup.

Auston Sigfrids pitched the final two innings of the game and worked around two hit batters in the sixth inning. Despite the offense being relatively quiet and missing a clutch hit, Spooner scored seven runs with two outs in the seventh inning to end the game early. In total, the Cardinals benefited from 13 walks and two hit batters, which helps to suppress the offensive hit total when there are many free passes.

    July 4 and 7

The offense will need to come alive with clutch hits as they face one of the toughest weekends on the schedule coming up.

Spooner (5-3, 3-3 Indy) travels to Hayward on the Fourth of July for a 7 p.m. matchup with the league-leading Hawks. Sunday, July 7, Spooner will host the Haugen Knights at 1 p.m., hoping for a little redemption on the season after the Knights took the first two games.

We hope to see you at the park!

In other Independent League action: Brill defeated Haugen 7-0; Haugen defeated Blue Hills 15-6.

Standings through June 30: Hayward 4-0, Brill 5-3, Haugen 3-3, Spooner 3-3, Blue Hills 0-6.
