Friedrich Memorial Fishing Tournament raises $5K for American Cancer Society
The 2024 Denny Friedrich Memorial Tournament and American Cancer Society fundraiser was held on June 1 on Big Chetac and Birch Lakes out of Doolittle Park in Birchwood. Forty-five anglers from the Rice Lake, Cameron, Barron, Chetek and Eau Claire areas fished the bass tournament. Wade Rickey weighed in the heaviest five-fish limit at 14.36 pounds to win. The Rice Lake Community Health Foundation is soliciting applications for matching grant funds. Any non-profit organization that provides health-related services to residents of the greater Rice Lake area is invited to submit a formal written request by Aug. 9. Ramp From WIS 70 To Southbound US 53 To Close Temporarily
WASHBURN COUNTY -- The ramp from WIS 70 to southbound US 53 east of Spooner in Washburn County is expected to be closed Monday through Friday, June 10 to 14. The closure is the result of a pavement replacement project on US 53 from Wildcat Road southeast of Spooner to County A that includes replacing ramp pavement at the WIS 70 and US 63 interchanges.
County W project update
The pulverizing work on the County Highway W project is expected to reach the causeway between Long Lake and Wilson Lake on Wednesday, June 12, according to an announcement from the Price County Highway Department. The exact time and date will be updated as soon as possible, but is dependent on weather and construction progress. During the 8-to-10 hours that are needed for the construction on the narrow section of County Highway W, between Birch Hill Road and East Wilson Flowage Road, County Highway W will be closed to through traffic and detoured. The detour route will be County Highway S, to County Highway F, to State Highway 13. The County Highway W project started on May 23, Following the pulverization work the paving portion of the project is expected to be completed in two to three weeks.
Potential Asphalt Scam In Spooner Reported
SPOONER, WI -- DrydenWire has received a concerning report from a vigilant citizen regarding a suspicious individual driving a white truck in the Spooner area. The driver claims to be an Asphalt Subcontractor for the Highway Department and is approaching homes with the pretext of having "a few truck loads of extra asphalt" and looking to "recoup costs."
Northwest Wisconsin WTU donates to school trap teams
SPOONER — The Northwest Wisconsin Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited came through in a big way for area high school trap shooting clubs this week. Northwest Wisconsin Chapter donated $2,000 each to Spooner’s Northland Trap Team and the Shell Lake FFA team. County Board passes resolutions
SHELL LAKE — The Washburn County Board approved a number of resolutions at their meeting Tuesday, May 21. The board approved a .28 position for a Veterans Service Office administrative assistant; authorized the jail daily fee to be increased; and approved using the Aging & Disability Resource Center/Aging fund balance to purchase a freezer and ADA-accessible restroom doors for the Washburn County Wellness Center 50+.
