MIKANA - Two kayakers were rescued from Mikana Dam on Sunday, June 9, after overturning in the current. Pro mountain bike racers familiar to the Hayward-Cable area won the Epic Bike Festival cross-country races hosted by the American Birkebeiner Foundation over the June 8-9 weekend. Man sent to prison on OWI-8
A 70-year-old Sarona man was sentenced to prison on Tuesday for eighth-offense operating while intoxicated. Roger D. Harrison was charged on Aug. 16, 2022, in Barron County Circuit Court with the felony after police say he nearly collided with a vehicle driven by a Barron County Sheriff’s Department investigator while speeding and attempting to pass other vehicles on Highway 8. According to the criminal complaint, Harrison’s preliminary breath test result was 0.249. The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge on March 22 and Judge Maureen D. Boyle sentenced him on Tuesday to an eight-year prison sentence, with three years of initial confinement followed by five on extended supervision. Harrison’s driver’s license will be revoked for 36 months. During supervision he must maintain absolute sobriety and can’t operate a motor vehicle.
Friedrich Memorial Fishing Tournament raises $5K for American Cancer Society
The 2024 Denny Friedrich Memorial Tournament and American Cancer Society fundraiser was held on June 1 on Big Chetac and Birch Lakes out of Doolittle Park in Birchwood. Forty-five anglers from the Rice Lake, Cameron, Barron, Chetek and Eau Claire areas fished the bass tournament. Wade Rickey weighed in the heaviest five-fish limit at 14.36 pounds to win. Brought to the scales were 175 bass for 381 pounds at an average of 2.18 per fish. All were released alive. ...
Hunt Hill hosting Summer Solstice Paddle June 21
With the longest day of the year coming up, Hunt Hill of Sarona will be holding a Summer Solstice Paddle on June 21 from 7:30-9 p.m. Attendees can enjoy paddling on Hunt Hill’s Twin Lakes during the summer solstice’s extended daylight hours. Life jackets will be available, but participants are welcome to bring their own. A lifeguard will be present during the program. Families, beginners and experienced canoers are all welcome.
