The St. Louis Cardinals drafted unusually high this season after a dreadful 2023 campaign. St. Louis ultimately picked seventh following their 71-91 finish.

With their first-round pick, they selected infielder JJ Wetherholt out of West Virginia University. Wetherholt recently made his professional debut and has been performing well at Single-A Palm Beach.

On Wednesday, the Cardinals top pick accomplished a major milestone.

"JJ Wetherholt, pro homer No. 1!" MLB Pipeline tweeted. "Selected 7th overall by the Cardinals, the 2023 Big 12 Player of the Year with West Virginia goes deep for the Palm Beach Cardinals."

This is likely the first of many for Wetherholt. He possesses an impressive power stroke from the left side of the plate and can play both shortstop and second base.

St. Louis is understandably high on their top draft pick. But this is certainly a good sign, and it looks like the Cardinals struck gold with their first-round pick this year.

It will be interesting to watch and see how Wetherholt adapts to professional baseball. Perhaps if he keeps producing at the plate, he'll rise through the ranks of the St. Louis system and find his way into their future plans.

The home run he hit traveled pretty far, and this is a good sign for the Cardinals as it pertains to their future. He'll help strengthen their depth on the position player side for the next several years.
