The Detroit Lions are getting their first look at second-year signal-caller Hendon Hooker in a game in the preseason opener against the New York Giants, and the young quarterback is showing off more than just his arm.

Hooker entered the game in the third quarter after Nate Sudfeld had the entire first half and did nothing with it. After a slow start, Hooker finally got the ball moving, using a combination of his arm and legs.

On one play, Hooker showed he's both fast and strong after he laid the boom on a Giants defender to pick up a first down. Check out the impressive play below.

Unfortunately, the drive ended up stalling after the Lions failed to convert on a fourth down in the red zone. After the drive, Hooker had five completions on nine passes for 36 yards, and four carries for 34 yards.

Most importantly, Hooker showed good poise in the pocket and was decisive with his throws. It was a positive performance overall for Hooker.

Hooker is competing with Nate Sudfeld for the backup quarterback job behind Jared Goff. After just a few drives from the Tennessee product, it's clear he offers much more than Sudfeld, who can't come close to matching Hooker's athleticism.
