Cubs GM 'will be out of a job' next summer if losing continues, per insider

The Chicago Cubs will fire their general manager by next summer if things don't improve at Wrigley Field, according to a prominent insider.

Chicago's president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer has made more positive moves than negative ones since he took over in November 2020 for Theo Epstein.

Still, people in Hoyer's seat are ultimately judged by wins and losses, and since the Cubs have struggled, that seat is reportedly growing warm beneath Hoyer.

If Chicago doesn't markedly improve next season, the 50-year-old Hoyer will likely be canned, according to The Athletic's Cubs expert Sahadev Sharma.

"It feels like (Hoyer's) biggest mistakes have been the moves he hasn’t made," Sharma said on Friday.

"He probably should have shored up the bullpen more over the past couple of offseasons — losing Jeremiah Estrada for nothing should be put in the bad column, as well. Adding a superstar bat is something he still needs to do."

"There are quite a few positives from Hoyer’s first three-plus seasons ... but ultimately, he has to be judged on the wins and losses. Even if one is being generous ... it hasn’t been good enough. So yes, Hoyer is on the hot seat. There’s no denying that. This season has been disappointing, and if they’re not contending next summer, it likely means Hoyer will be out of a job."

Amazingly, Chicago is still not out of playoff contention in 2024. If the Cubs can pull off a miraculous run over the next two months and earn a Wild Card berth, all of the Hoyer chatter will evaporate.
