Earlier this week, many teams released their first depth charts of the 2024 season, including the Cincinnati Bengals . A lot is likely to change between now and the beginning of the season, so it’s important to take these depth charts with a grain of salt. However, there were some interesting choices made on a number of them, including with the Bengals – particularly along the offensive line.
When the first depth chart dropped for the Bengals, many were eager to see how things would play out at right tackle. Rookie first-rounder Amarius Mims has reportedly been the talk of training camp, and has been impressive in place of the injured incumbent, Trent Brown. Despite being impressive, it was Brown and not Mims that was listed as the team’s starting right tackle.
Despite being listed as the second-string, Mims has a real chance to win the starting job when all is said and done according to the latest training camp report from ESPN’s Dan Graziano. Graziano recently visited a number of team’s training camps, including the Bengals , and released his notes on each. Graziano mentions that Mims has taken all the first-team reps and has been winning over teammates and coaches all summer.
One teammate, Graziano reports, has been particularly impressed with Mims’ training camp performance – starting left tackle Orlando Brown, Jr. Brown told Graziano:
"I don't know what they're going to do for sure, but Amarius is doing a really good job, man. I think he's going to be a really good pro… The way I would describe it is, there's guys that are raw, and then there's guys that are just inexperienced. And he's just inexperienced, you know, in my opinion. He went to Georgia, he practiced against great talent, he played in the SEC, played in those big games. I just don't think he played in many of them. But he's good, man, I think he's going to be a good pro."
All that has led Graziano to believe that Mims has a “legitimate chance to win the starting right tackle job”.
