With backup quarterback Drew Lock dealing with a hip injury, the New York Giants were thought to add another body to the room in the meantime.

However, the Giants are making a surprise decision with Lock on the shelf for potentially a few weeks due to the injury he sustained during the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions .

Head coach Brian Daboll told reporters before Sunday's training camp practice that the Giants won't be making an addition to the quarterback room amid Lock's injury.

Instead, Tommy DeVito will serve as the backup while tight end Tyree Jackson, a former college quarterback, will take some snaps at quarterback.

Daboll said Lock is expected to miss at least three practices, which means he won't be on the field at all as the Giants prepare for their second preseason game against the Houston Texans on Saturday.

Though general manager Joe Schoen said during the game broadcast that Lock could have returned to the preseason opener if needed, a report later came out that the former second-round pick is dealing with a bad bone bruise and oblique strain.

In the preseason opener, Lock struggled before the injury, completing 4-of-10 passes for 17 yards and an interception.

Jackson is a converted tight end after playing quarterback at Buffalo in college. During his junior season, Jackson completed 55.3% of his passes for 3,131 yards, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 14 games.

There still is no official timetable for Lock's return, but this is a surprising decision to carry only two true quarterbacks on the roster with two preseason games remaining.
