Following the preseason Week 1 game against the New York Giants , Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell revealed the team planned on signing a quarterback at some point this week.

Well, that happened on Monday. The Lions announced the signing of signal-caller Jake Fromm. In addition to that, Detroit signed linebacker Ty Summers, released offensive lineman Ike Boettger, and waived wide receiver Antoine Green with an injury designation.

The signing of Fromm comes on the heels of the Lions getting mixed results from their competitors for the backup quarterback job behind Jared Goff. Veteran Nate Sudfeld struggled mightily, and second-year quarterback Hendon Hooker shined, although he also suffered a concussion.

Campbell said on Sunday that he hopes to have Hooker back at practice by the end of the week, although that is not guaranteed.

Fromm gives the Lions another body in practice and an emergency quarterback for the next preseason game if Hooker can't go. Fromm last played a snap in the NFL with the Giants in 2021, appearing in three games (two starts). He completed 27-of-60 passes (45%) for 210 yards and one touchdown to three picks in those contests.

Green was in the midst of a battle for a depth role at wide receiver. He tallied three catches for 13 yards in preseason Week 1 before exiting early with a concussion .

Summers gives the Lions another body at linebacker and someone who can contribute on special teams. Boettger was vying for a roster spot entering training camp but likely became expendable with rookie Christian Mahogany set to return.
