Commanders rookies keep suffering from injury bug at training camp

The Washington Commanders just can’t catch a break from the injury bug involving the rookie draft class.

Johnny Newton, the team’s hyped second-round pick who just returned from offseason foot surgery a mere weeks ago, is now dealing with what Commanders head coach Dan Quinn has described as a “soft tissue injury” and carries a day-to-day status, per The Athletic’s Ben Standig .

Newton is just one rookie dealing with an injury at Commanders camp right now. Fifth-round linebacker Jordan Magee is on the week-to-week shelf with a knee injury, third-round offensive tackle Brandon Coleman is day to day and undrafted free agent quarterback Sam Hartman has a right shoulder injury holding him out.

Both Newton and Coleman are huge setbacks. The former, despite some injury concerns that dipped his draft stock, is expected to have a strong impact on the front seven’s pass-rush alongside the likes of Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.

Coleman, meanwhile, has been a camp breakout to the point of looking like the starter in front of second-overall pick Jayden Daniels.

For the rookies unable to go this week, the end result would be missing the team’s second preseason game on Saturday against the Miami Dolphins.

Looking bigger picture, though, Coleman is missing key reps if he’s to have proper timing with the first-team offense, while Newton is already dealing with his second injury-related absence since being drafted.
