Giants' electric undrafted rookie running back making push for roster spot

The New York Giants have a massive competition in the backfield, and one undrafted rookie is staking his claim on a roster spot.

Though they already have a trusted starter in veteran Devin Singletary, the competition for the backup roles behind him is wide open.

The main players vying for the backup role include rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. and second-year back Eric Gray. But undrafted rookie Dante Miller is making his push for a spot.

After a strong showing at training camp and in the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions , Miller is potentially closing in on a roster spot, according to Art Stapleton of The Record .

"He has impressed the Giants with a willingness and the ability to run inside with physicality. His push for the 53 is on the upswing," Stapleton wrote.

Miller led the Giants with 12 carries for 63 rushing yards while adding two receptions for seven receiving yards in the preseason opener.

We had Miller making the cut in our 53-man roster projection following the preseason opener. The depth he can provide in the backfield along with some special teams contributions as a return man should help boost his stock.

Whether Miller's roster spot would come at the expense of another running back isn't clear. Singletary is a lock, and Tracy is about as close to a lock as it gets.

Meanwhile, Gray's performance in the preseason opener gives him a much better chance to make the roster so it's likely the Giants would have to carry four running backs.

Either way, Miller has been a pleasant surprise for the Giants since he signed on this offseason, and he's making a push for a roster spot.
