Haason Reddick is doing his best not to play for the New York Jets.

After trading for the former Eagles edge pass rusher in April, New York is right to have no plans to trade him again in August.

Reddick, if he ends his training camp holdout at some point, would be playing in the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract he signed with Philadelphia in 2022, which is part of the reason why the Jets traded for him in the first place.

Why is Haason Reddick demanding a trade?

As a pending free agent in 2025, Reddick would prefer to play on a more lucrative extension with additional big guaranteed money. The Jets, however, are getting a bargain season from Reddick they can't afford to give up.

Reddick is set to earn $15 million combined in 2024 from base salary, bonuses, and incentives, but the Jets are taking only a $750,00 cap hit.

Why won't the Jets trade Haason Reddick?

The Jets also need Reddick, whom they acquired for a conditional third-round pick. Through seven seasons on his previous three teams (Eagles, Cardinals, and Panthers), Reddick has posted 58 carer sacks. He's hit double digits in sacks the past four seasons (12.5, 11, 16, and 11).

They picked him up from the Eagles to help replace free-agent departure Bryce Huff, who had 10 sacks last season. Huff signed with the Eagles in March and turned out to replace Reddick.

Reddick is a prolific complementary pass rusher, but from defensive end, he's shaky against the run and doesn't offer the versatility to play well inside. That makes his price just right. In terms of average annual salary, Reddick is still tied for 23rd at his position, a little behind Huff ($17 million) and the Vikings' Jonathan Greenard ($19 million)

Both Huff and Greenard got paid by new teams in the open market in the 2023 offseason. Reddick will get that opportunity again, three years after turning breakout seasons with the Cardinals and Panthers into a then-massive payday with the Eagles.

Reddick can have a huge year in the Jets' defense playing opposite end Jermaine Johnson and next to stud tackle Quinnen Williams. There's a high ceiling for Reddick in Robert Saleh's scheme.

The Jets have big aspirations again with Aaron Rodgers back healthy for the offense. They're not about to weaken the defense.

Reddick has a key role, and the Jets also know they can't expect too much compensation for him now given they got him for only a third-rounder then. Reddick should also realize his path to breaking the bank for yet another new team is playing out a promising productive season in New York.
