The Vikings went into training camp with a quarterback battle, but the outcome will be determined by injury.

Star rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been diagnosed with a torn right meniscus and is expected to undergo knee surgery, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter .

The No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft was competing with 2018 No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold for Minnesota's starting job. He looked solid in his first NFL preseason action over the weekend, completing 11 of 17 passes (64.7%) for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Questions arose when he popped up on the Vikings' practice injury report with right knee soreness on Monday and now, we know the severity of the ailment.

For the latest updates on McCarthy's knee injury status, The Sporting News has you covered below.

    J.J. McCarthy knee injury update

McCarthy will be out indefinitely with a torn right meniscus and is expected to undergo knee surgery, according to ESPN's Schefter.

This announcement comes one day after he was held out of Minnesota's practice due to right knee soreness.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell originally said that decision was "out of precaution."

"We're going to continue an evaluation on him and get some more testing done. [He is a] very important player, obviously, so we want to make sure we're smart before he participates, making sure we have a good understanding of where he's at."

Those test results revealed the severity of McCarthy's injury and now, the Vikings will prepare to move forward with Darnold as QB1 for the foreseeable future.

The typical recovery time for a meniscus surgery is four-to-six weeks, so this should not be a season-ending injury for the Michigan product. However, if it's a full meniscus repair, he could be out closer to 8-12 weeks.

This post will be updated when more information becomes available.
