Giants surprisingly land journeyman quarterback in proposed trade idea

Another day, another NFL analyst suggesting the New York Giants trade for a quarterback.

With (bearded) Daniel Jones set to make his preseason debut this weekend for the first time since tearing his ACL in November of the 2023 season, the Giants know who their starter is.

And while they feel confident in the services of former second-round pick Drew Lock as his backup, Lock is also dealing with a hip injury .

That injury, though, isn't expected to keep Lock from being available as Jones' backup for the Week 1 opener against the Minnesota Vikings .

Furthermore, the Giants made it clear they weren't going to make any corresponding additions to the quarterback room while Lock heals.

So it's a bit surprising to see the Giants as the suggested landing spot in a trade for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke, proposed by Alex Kay of Bleacher Report .

Kay proposed the Giants send a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Falcons in exchange for Heinicke and a 2025 seventh-round pick.

"Heinicke is not a player Big Blue would want to feature under center for any significant stretch, but for the low cost of a late-round pick swap, the Giants could fix up their depth behind an injury-prone starting quarterback," Kay wrote.

The 31-year-old doesn't move the needle much, especially coming off a porous showing in Atlanta to the point that Arthur Smith had no choice but to go back Desmond Ridder, who was benched in favor of Heinicke.

Doubling down on a similar type of quarterback to that of Lock, who could very well be fully healthy in two weeks, doesn't seem like a wise idea.

Jones does have injury questions, but that's entire reason they signed Lock this offseason.

Would it mean much to part ways with a sixth-round pick? Probably not. Late Day 3 picks typically don't amount to more than special teams contributors — valuable assets in their own right.

But the Giants should look to save all the ammo they can in the event they need to trade up during the 2025 NFL Draft for a potential franchise quarterback.

Because if Jones goes down again, that's where the focus should be.
